EC discusses poll security with home minister
Kathmandu, August 24
The Election Commission today held discussion with Minister of Home Affairs Janardan Sharma on security for the third phase of local level elections slated for September 18 in eight districts of Province 2.
During the meeting with Minister Sharma, Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav and Commissioner Ishwori Prasad Paudel expressed their security concerns.
According to a press release issued by EC Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma, CEC Yadav and Commissioner Paudel also drew the home minister’s attention towards roads and bridges damaged by recent flooding in Province 2 and directed the ministry to carry out repair work.
The polls panel said it would be difficult to launch voter education programme, reach polling centres and supply electoral materials to polling centres of Province 2 if the damaged roads and bridges were not repaired soon.
The EC office bearers also asked Minister Sharma to ensure that polls-related bills were passed and provide the report of Constituency Delimitation Commission as soon as possible to hold provincial and parliamentary elections scheduled for November 26.
In response, Sharma assured EC officials that the government would take appropriate measures to repair damaged roads and bridges. He said the government had already taken initiatives to pass poll related bills from the Parliament.
The EC had yesterday asked Acting Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar and Chief Secretary Rajendra Kishor Chhetri to repair damaged roads and bridges in districts of Province 2 immediately, which were damaged by recent flooding.
The election body also directed the government to take Nepali Army’s help to resume transportation in the districts of Province 2.
