Five-day ban on filariasis drug
Minister for Health and Population Girirajmani Pokhrel on Sunday directed the authority concerned to “stop the distribution of medicine against elephantiasis in Dhanusha, Mahottari and Rautahat districts for five days”. Speaking at a programme organised at the Janakpur zonal hospital, Pokhrel said, “The distribution of the medicine should be immediately stopped because some persons have died and hundreds fallen ill after taking it.”
The anti-elephantiasis medicine, approved by the World Health Organisation, is being used in 80 countries.
It is being used in Nepal since 2003, Pokhrel said. He said the number of deaths caused
by the medicine should be made public.
