Five districts vulnerable to poll violence, says NEMA

Kathmandu, April 8:

National Election Monitoring Alliance today said a few districts are still sensitive in terms of security, considering the number of violent incidents recorded between March 23 and April 6.

NEMA has recorded 13 incidents of violence in Sunsari, eight in Ramechhap and Dhading, seven in Dolakha and Chitwan, six in Kavre and five each in Baitadi, Nawalparasi, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchowk and Okhaldhunga.

A telephone survey conducted by the alliance indicates that the situation for the election in five districts — Kalikot, Jumla, Dhading, Dhankuta and Dhanusha — is unfavourable while situation in 41 districts is favourable and moderately favourable in the remaining 29 districts.

Organising a press conference, Subodh Raj Pyakurel, the convener of NEMA, said the government still had 48 hours to improve the security situation. “If we find any serious incident during the polls we will file complaints at the Election Commission before 10 pm on the polling day,” he said.

He claimed that the alliance would have its observers at each booth.

NEMA has recorded 290 instances of violation of the election code of conduct by different parties that include 149 cases of attack on cadres and supporters of different political parties, 28 abductions, 24 cases of threatening and torture, four killings, three abductions and

82 other cases.

Pyakurel said booths in remote areas with no transportation facilities could be captured and there is a possibility of people casting votes twice as thousands of people have their names in two places. He also stated that observers have been abducted, thrashed and threatened

by the cadres and activists of political parties.
