Football scheme launched for garbage collectors

Khotang, February 8

Khotang’s Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality Ward No 11 has come up with a novel idea in order to make its sanitation campaign a success.

Keeping in view the broader sanitation drive launched by the municipality, the ward had announced that it would provide a football to the collector(s) for each five kilogram of refuse collected in December.

According to ward chairperson Ramchandra Rai, the ward has distributed some 28 footballs since the announcement of incentive. “Football for garbage campaign will continue till the ward gets rid of all old garbage,” said the ward chair, adding the campaign has been popular among children and teenagers. “Cleaning the villages that are strewn with plastic wrappers, bottles, and so on was not easy otherwise,” said Rai, adding that they had made arrangement to manage the refuse collected from all villages and locality.

Local Rajan Bhattarai was all praise for his ward’s initiatives. “On the one hand, it has ensured better participation of the locals to clean their villages and areas, and on the other, providing football to the kids will of course help in the development of sports in the ward,” he said, adding he was happy that his village has gotten rid of the trash that has been quite an eyesore.

The municipality has a total of 15 wards and each ward is carrying out their sanitation campaign in their own way to support the municipality’s campaign.
