FSU elections before civic polls: NSU chair

Pokhara, January 12

Nepal Student Union central Chairperson Nainasingh Mahar has demanded that elections to the free student union be held prior to local polls.

Speaking at a press meet organised by Press Union Kaski chapter today, the NC-aligned student union leader described the FSU elections as having great political leverage with the party in the elections of local bodies.

“FSU polls before local polls are desirable as it will charge our youths with election fervour and help consolidate the student organisation and the entire party, which subsequently could prove handy in turning the result of the local polls in our favour,” Mahar argued.

The NSU leader criticised the previous government for slashing the annual budget allocated for education. “From 17 per cent, the Oli-led government brought the annual budget down to 11 per cent, which is unfortunate,” he said, stressing the importance of the state’s role in the education of students from poor family background.

“The state should allocate more fund for the education sector and ensure that economically weak students get education free of cost,” he argued.
