Garbage collection halted in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, August 13:

Chief executive officer of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Dinesh Thapaliya today said the private organisations that collect garbage from houses in the city should transport it to the Sisdole landfill.

“They would not be allowed to dump garbage at the Teku transfer station,” he said adding that the KMC is preparing to systematise garbage management.

Meanwhile, the KMC office remained closed for half day today following the strike called by the five different workers’ unions of the KMC. The workers have been demanding that no private organisations should be allowed to collect garbage in the KMC. They also protested against the police action against them yesterday.

The private organisations, however, have been staging protest in front of the KMC office at Bagdurbar demanding that the KMC allow them to dump garbage at the Teku transfer station or bear the fuel cost incurred while transporting garbage to Sisdole landfill site.

“The private organisations collect money from the locals for collecting garbage from their houses. What is that money for if they can’t transport garbage to Sisdole?” Macha Babu Malakar, president of Nepal Swotantra Safai Majdoor Union, asked. He alleged that the private organisations had bribed the KMC officials to speak for them.
