Goldsmiths take to streets

Pokhara, August 20:

Protesting an alleged attack on them, goldsmiths of Pokhara took out a rally here today. According to the goldsmiths, goons hired by Jewellers’ Organisation Kaski had attacked them last evening.

The rally taken out from Bindhyabasini converged in Chipledhunga. Demanding a 75 per cent hike in their wages, goldsmiths have been staging an agitation for four days. According to president of the Goldsmiths’ Welfare Committee Bhim Sentury,

the jewellers had hired goons to thrash 20 goldsmiths, while the latter were heading to Armala jewellery in Lamachaur to close the shop.

However, Kaski chapter president of the JO Buddhi Bahadur Gahatraj claimed goldsmiths associated with GWC had vandalised shops belonging to the members of JO some days ago.Demanding a hike in goldsmiths’ salaries, the GWC had submitted a 14-point charter of demands to JO three months ago.
