Govt-issued identity card can serve as voter ID card

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has decided to allow voters, who are unable to get hold of their voters' identity cards, to cast their ballots based on the photo-identity cards issued by the government bodies.

As per the decision of the EC, the voters could use their franchise by possessing voter identity card issued by the EC in 2013, passport, driving licence, land ownership card or any other certificate with photograph issued by the government agencies.

Furthermore, the details of the citizenship could be made valid based on clause 48 of the Local Level Polls Directive, 2017 by considering minor mistakes in case some errors were seen in the voter name list and voters identity card.

EC spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma said that further information in this regard could be received by dialling 16600144222.
