Govt to purchase 20 million LED bulbs to save energy

KATHMANDU: The government on Thursday has decided to purchase 20 million LED bulbs in a bid to save some 200 MW electricity in the country.

The meeting of the Council of Ministers  took the decision  following a proposal forwarded  by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and the Finance Ministry, said Energy Minister Janardan Sharma.

An agreement which  had been reached during the meeting of the Energy Secretaries from Nepal and India early this year paved the way for the Energy Ministry to purchase the bulbs from the government company of India.

The Energy Ministry has planned to buy the LED bulbs from Energy Efficiency Service Ltd under the Indian Ministry of Energy at the subsidised price of Rs 2 billion.

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has planned to distribute the LED bulbs.
