Govt to prioritise reconstruction, conservation of ancient forts

KATHMANDU: The government is to prioritise reconstruction and conservation of important monuments related to the country’s independence and sovereignty.

In this connection, Ministry of Defence has prepared an action plan for the reconstruction and conservation of seven forts of historical importance within the coming five years in the first phase, spokesperson for the ministry, Baburam Gautam, said.

The ancient forts to be renovated and conserved in the first phase include forts in Sindhuli, Makawanpur, Chisapani, Jitpur, Nuwakot, Hariharpur and Upardanggadhi. The Ministry plans to give the responsibility of reconstruction and conservation of these forts to Nepal Army.

The provinces and local levels have been giving priority to highlight and protect the ancient forts and monuments located within their borders, after the country adopted federalism.

It has been learnt that the army will carry out this task with an investment of Rs 215.9 million. The reconstruction and preservation of these ancient heritage sites would also help in promotion of tourism in the areas.
