High level panel begins probe into Jhapa firing

Jhapa, October 29

A high level investigation panel formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to probe the killing of Naresh Thapa in police firing during the demonstration in Birtamod on Friday and the suspicious death of 11-year-old Laxman Siwakoti of Arjundhara Municipality a month ago, began its investigation in Jhapa from today.

The panel consulted Siwakoti’s family and neighbours besides taking stock of the spot from where the body was recovered.

A four-member panel  headed by Joint Secretary Birendra Kumar Yadav of the ministry comprises DIG Chiranjibi Adhikari of Armed Police Force, DIG Ramesh Kumar Bhattarai of Nepal Police and Investigation Director Harihar Poudel of National Investigation Bureau.

Panel coordinator Yadav pledged to reveal the report as early as possible. He, however, said it would take time as they had just initiated the probe. He urged all for their support and cooperation.

Meanwhile, Jhapa Chief District Officer Rishi Ram Tiwari said the curfew that was clamped in Birtamod area from Friday afternoon had been lifted from Sunday 9:00pm to Monday 9:00am.
