Historical Saran Mela kicks-off in Pyuthan

PYUTHAN: Saran Mela, which kicks off from the next day of Bhaitika Tihar festival, has begun in Pyuthan district, on Saturday.

It is considered as one of the oldest and historic fairs in the western region of Nepal. In the festival, the artists demonstrate their sword skills in tune with the music.

It is believed that around 500 years ago, the then state of Bhitrikot initiated this festival for its people to showcase their war skills.

Winners of the Saraya Nach competition, held on Saturday, were awarded with cash prizes. A team from Punyakhola won the competition bagged Rs 100,000, while the teams from Syaulibang and Thapadanda became the first and the second runner-ups, bagging Rs 70,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively.

Sushil Pokhrel, former President of Federation of Nepali Journalists Pyuthan Chapter, said an overwhelming number of spectators had graced the event.

He, however, urged that the state failed to preserve the historic event of the nation.

Chief District Officer of Pyuthan, Ram Bahadur Kurungbang has urged all the stakeholders for their continuous support for the preservation and promotion of the event.
