HLPM redundant if it can't topple govt: Dr Bhattarai

BIRATNAGAR: UCPN-Maoist vice chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai today said the High-Level Political Mechanism would be insignificant if it failed to topple the present government.

Talking to mediapersons in Biratnagar airport today, Dr Bhattarai said, ''The HLPM will be redundant if it cannot pull down the government which has proved useless." Claiming that his party should lead the government since it was the largest in the Constituent Assembly, he said the statute could not be drafted in the failure.

''The mechanism is only a means while promulgation of the new constitution is the end. The goal cannot be achieved without changing the government, which the HLPM should aim at doing,'' Dr Bhattarai said. "The panel should also work on army integration."

He said the protracted political impasse would automatically end once a Maoist-led government was formed. He said the PM need not be included in the HLPM, adding that the three-party panel was independent and equipped with rights.
