House panel okays report

Kathmandu, December 18:

The Parliamentary Peace Agreement Implementation Monitoring Special Committee today endorsed a field report prepared by the committee.

The report is likely to be tabled in the Parliament tomorrow. The 12-member committee headed by MP Lekhraj Bhatta had visited Banke, Bardiya, Kanchanpur, Surkhet and Dhangadi districts to take stock of the conditions of the prisons, the condition of the displaced, whereabouts of those who had been disappeared and inspection of the Maoist cantonments. The members had also visited Nepal Army barracks.

The report has accused both the government and the Maoists of not complying with the peace agreement. “Both the sides have violated the peace agreement,” the report states.

It has also blamed the government for not being serious on its commitments regarding the uplift of the Maoist cantonments. Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel, who attended the committee meeting today, assured the lawmakers that the government would implement all past commitments and agreements.

Poudel promised to form a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) soon.
