House to chart course for assembly polls: Front

Kathmandu, May 6 :

The reconvened parliament’s task, alliance leaders said today, is to decide the process and modalities of the constituent assembly.

Speaking at an interface programme organised at Sambad Club, Bharat Mohan Adhikary of the CPN-UML suggested an interim government including the Maoists for conducting an election to a CA at the earliest. “Shortening the transitional period and smoothening the process of constituent assembly is essential,” he said.

NC (D) leader, Dr Narayan Dhakal pointed out the need to deal with the Maoists’ weapons before fixing a date for the CA election. “The poll should be conducted in a scenario free of fear,” he said. He also underlined the need to reach an agreement among the parties before

going for the CA election. “There won’t be peace in the country unless absolute democracy is achieved,” he said.

Arjun Narsing KC of the NC said the people should be given a place in state politics. “The Nepali people took part in the movement for lasting peace, supremacy and sovereignty of people, not to reinstate the House.”

KC commended the role of civil society and media during the movement, adding their role would be necessary during the election too. “We should agree to international monitoring, if need be,” he said. He emphasised on proportional representation and demanded that the ordinances introduced to curb people’s freedom be annulled immediately.

Pari Thapa of People’s Front said there should be extensive discussion before deciding on the process and modality of CA.
