Human rights violation cases up in Bhojpur

Bhojpur, December 8

Bhojpur has witnessed more than five dozen human rights violation incidents in the past 12 months.

The figure was made public at a programme organised to review the human rights situation in Bhojpur district headquarters today.

“So far as the data is concerned, as many as 64 incidents of human rights violation have occurred since December last year in the district,” said human rights activist Kiran Rai, while presenting the data, adding rape makes up the bulk of the cases.

As per data, there were 15 cases of rape and 13 of domestic violence. Similarly, the cases of thrashing, murder, abuse and polygamy stood at 11, 10 and five respectively.

Further, Rai informed about the improved scenario of judiciary in the district.

Local Peace Committee Bhojpur Secretary Tek Bahadur Shrestha presented data of 129 deaths including of police and army personnel during the Maoist conflict period. “Of them, 96 have received special relief amount, while four others received relief from the home ministry itself,” Shrestha said.

According to Shrestha, seven persons were forcibly disappeared during the insurgency in the district. Some 17 complaints were filed with the Commission of Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons from the district.

On his part, Civil Society Bhojpur coordinator Parshuram Tiwari called on all and sundry to be responsible to minimise the cases of human rights violation. “Though it’s understood that the state can’t provide cent per cent compensation in rights violation cases, it at least should provide relief, opportunity and facilities to the victims,” he demanded.
