The transaction of illegal drugs has increased in the Far-west Province headquarters Kailali of late.

According to official data, police arrested 16 persons, most of them from Dhangadi, with illegal drugs in the past two months in Kailali.

Police seized 919.3 gram heroin, 421 nitravet and 514 spasmo tablets, 14 bottles of phenergan, one bottle dilex and 966 gram hashish during the period.

Likewise, drug abuse is also rife in the district.

A youth was murdered over a dispute related to drug abuse about a month ago. Ashish Seti of Dhangadi sub-metropolis was sent to prison in connection with the murder.

Superintendent of Police Abhushan Timilsina said police had launched a campaign against drug smugglers in the district. “The campaign is aimed at making Dhangadi a drug-free town in a few months,” Timilsina added. “To curb abuse of drugs, we’re planning to launch a campaign in coordination with Dhangadi sub-metropolis targeting youths,” he said.

Meanwhile, police have hoped to reduce crime rate in the district by restricting the flow of illegal drugs to Nepal. An open border with India has posed serious challenge to security agencies to curb the flow of drugs.
