Indian national gunned down in police encounter, SMG seized

RAUTAHAT: One Indian national was shot dead by Rautahat Police in a gunfight at Bagmati Bridge in Rajdevi Municipality, Rautahat on Thursday night.

24-year-old Indra Jit Giri of Muzaffarpur in Tirhut, Bihar had sustained injuries in a gunfight which broke out after Giri and his gang members opened fire at police. Later, Giri was pronounced dead upon arrival at District Hospital in Gaur.

Police have seized a modern submachine gun used by Giri to open fire at the police who had reached the incident site for a security check acting on a tip-off that Indian criminals were active in the region.

Three persons carrying weapons were riding on a bike without a registration number, after one was shot, the other two fled while firing at the police, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ram Kumar Dhani informed.

The Police searched the area following the incident and seized a submachine gun and 4 rounds of ammunition, 1 magazine and 2 shells of bullets fired by the gang. Meanwhile, DSP Dhani said that a massive manhunt for other two persons involved in the gunfight was underway.

According to police, the gang members fired 12 rounds while the police offloaded 31 rounds in the incident without any casualties on police’s side.

The deceased’s body has been kept at District Hospital, Gaur.
