Interim constitution amendment can help resolve crisis, says Nembang
Kathmandu, February 6:
The Speaker of the Legislature-Parliament, Subas Nembang, today said some controversial provisions in the interim constitution can be scrapped, as “an amendment to it (statute) can settle the present crisis facing the nation”.
He asked the government and the authorities concerned to officially initiate process for the amendment with suitable provisions. He was addressing a programme titled ‘Interim constitution and its challenges’ organised by the Constitutional Lawyers’ Forum.
Nembang said the constitution can be amended to settle some controversial problems. Experts can be called to suggest the parliament and the government to adopt suitable provisions, he further said.
He added: “Since the Prime Minister has already promised the parliament that suggestions for amendment proposed by various parties are the property of the nation, the government has no problem to accommodate them in the interim statute.”
Outgoing president of the Nepal Bar Association, Shambhu Thapa, said the government would not be able to resolve the present problems, if the government and political parties are not ready to make necessary amendments to the interim constitution.
A drafter of the interim constitution and MP, Harihar Dahal, said they could not get better environment while drafting the constitution. NBA president Bishwokanta Mainali said without changes the statute cannot move the nation towards constituent assembly polls.
