Interim House will decide on CA or referendum: Adhikari

Biratnagar, November 6:

Standing Committee member of the CPN-UML, Bharat Mohan Adhikari, today said an interim parliament would decide whether to go for constituent assembly polls or hold a referendum to decide the fate of monarchy.

“An agreement has been reached with Maoists on arms management. The main issue to be settled now is that of the future of monarchy and this will be done by an interim parliament,” Adhikari said. He was addressing a press meet organised by the Press Chautatri, here today.

The interim parliament will comprise all groups, classes, castes and janajatis and it will decide whether to go for constituent assembly elections or a referendum, Adhikari said.

He said the political parties should agree to what the interim parliament decides on monarchy.

“CPN-UML is firm that a referendum is required to decide the future of monarchy, but the party will accept the decision made by the interim parliament with mutual agreement of all parties,” he said.

Another standing committee member of the party, Ishwor Pokharel, told the press conference that a referendum would show the opinion of a majority of the people. He added that UML will not change its stand that a referendum is needed to settle the issue of monarchy.
