Interim statute in a month: Sherchan

Kathmandu, August 29 :

Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan said today that complications in the interim constitution will be sorted out within a month.

“Agreement on the interim constitution is not going to take more than a month. This will solve most of the problems related to the form and content of the constitution as well as the future of the constituent assembly polls,” he said at the Reporters’ Club.

He said the draft of the interim constitution had been handed over to the joint talks teams. “They will hold discussions on it in the next summit talks to be held most probably next week,” he said, adding that there would not be major changes in the draft constitution. Sherchan said after the talks the 1990 Constitution would be dissolved, a new one would be implemented and the date for constituent assembly election would be announced. He said the Maoists’ programmes in the districts were delaying the summit talks. “We don’t want to wait for the Maoists to stop their programmes, but we want them to find time for talks,” he said. He said the UN mission had arrived following the invitation of the seven-party alliance and the Maoists and they would do what we tell them to do. “We will not tolerate any interference on the matter that we ourselves can solve,” he said.

He said the Polio programme, scheduled for September 1 and 2, will continue undisturbed, as he had promised health workers to meet their demands by then. “And the agitating health workers have also promised that they will not disrupt the programme .” The workers had threatened to disrupt the drive if their demands were not met by August.
