ISG urges Maoists to stop extortion, kidnapping

Kathmandu, February 9:

The Industrial Security Group (ISG) today expressed concern over “the continued extortion, kidnappings and violence by the Maoists against businesses and industries across the country”.

On behalf of the ISG members, the US embassy in Kathmandu, as the acting chair, today issued the statement at a time when the Maoists are preparing for a mass gathering in the capital.

“Once again, the Maoists are demanding money, lodging and food from the businesses and residents in the valley,” said the statement. It said the Maoists’ continuing use of violence and intimidation is in clear violation of their commitments under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and at complete odds with their new status as members of the Interim Parliament.

“In Kathmandu, while Maoist extortion has continued all along, it appears to be soaring in the run-up to the Maoist rally on February 13,” the statement said.

It further said that the business community welcomes efforts made by the government to address the grievances of the Madhesis and the action to re-establish the rule of law nationwide.

“If Maoist abuses and trade union militancy continue, Nepal’s private sector will be choked and investment will cease. If that happens, Nepal will be unable to generate the jobs and prosperity it needs to develop,” it stated.

The ISG comprises representatives of the Embassies of France, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the Delegation of the European Commission, along with their bilateral Chambers of Commerce.
