Kala-azar hits 12 districts
Bara, June 5 :
About six million people of 12 districts in Nepal are living in kala-azar affected areas, said a report presented at an orientation programme organised by the Health Service Department in Kalaiya of Bara today.
According to the report, 22,000 people were affected by kala-azar. Among them 500 died within a period between 1995 to 2004. Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Siraha, Udaypur, Saptari, Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa are kala-azaar affected districts, said Dr Ram Lakhan Shah, medical superintendent of Kalaiya-based district hospital.
Kala-azar was found for the first time in Bara in 2051 BS. At present, two kala-azar patients are undergoing treatment at the Kalaiya hospital, it was informed at the programme.
