Kin blame doc for pregnant woman's death

Gaighat, June 10

The death of a woman in course of treatment at Udayapur district hospital yesterday has sparked tension after the kin refused to receive the dead body, accusing the doctor involved in her treatment of medical negligence.

Januka BK, 29, of Triyuga municipality-3, Sonapur was admitted to the hospital five days ago after she complained of labour pain. She died at the hospital yesterday evening.

The deceased’s kin have claimed that Januka and her unborn baby died because Dr DL Yadav, who was attending to her,did not conduct surgery in time.

“She was admitted to the hospital five days ago but it was the doctor who kept postponing her operation saying she would have a normal delivery. She died with the unborn foetus because of the doctor’s utter negligence,” said Jamuna’s husband, Govind BK.

Dr Yadav has been serving at the hospital for the past seven years after he was appointed on contract basis.

Hospital chief Dr Bishnu Bahadur Basnet dismissed the charges against the hospital and its doctor. “The patient died from an inopportune cardiac arrest while we were preparing for the operation, not due to negligence” he claimed.

Talks between the kin of the deceased and the officials at the District Administration Office ended inconclusively today.

The body of the deceased woman is still lying in the hospital and the kin have clarified that they would not receive the body until the hospital takes action against the concerned doctor.
