Lamjung Prison compound wall collapses

LAMJUNG: Compound wall of Lamjung District Prison collapsed on Friday, posing a security threat to district authorities.

The District Police Office (DPO) has beefed up security at the jail and around as prisoners may flee, DSP Pawan Giri said.

The devastating April 25 earthquake, hundreds of its aftershocks and frequent rainfalls this week had weakened the wall.

Meanwhile, the prison said other parts of the jailhouse are also on the verge of collapse.

Jailer Deependra Kumar Yadav said police personnel deployed to guard the prison were terrified after the collapse.

A team from Nepal Engineers' Association had categorised the jailhouse as unsafe following the April 25 tremor.

The prison, however, had failed to shift its inmates to other safer places.

"They talk about human rights and system transformation," an inmate lamented, "But, where are our human rights?"

Currently, 72 men and nine women are doing their time at the jail.
