Landslide missing yet to be traced

KHOTANG: Rescuers have still been searching for the 13 persons of Jaleshwori VDC-2, who went missing in a landslide on Monday night, with slim chances of rescuing them alive.

According to acting Chief District Officer Krishna Bahadur Katawal, they could not trace the missing persons despite over 12-hour long frantic efforts by a large number of rescuers. Around 200 rescue workers of Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Nepal Red Cross, other organisations and local residents have been searching for the victims in the debris.

The landslide had struck the Khotang village on early Tuesday morning.

Milan Bhattarai, police inspector at District Police Office, informed the rescue operation could not be carried out as expected due to the recurrence of the landslides in the area.

Local office of Nepal Red Cross Society too informed chances were waning of getting the missing people alive.

Besides the missing, 95 persons of 12 families have been displaced from the village due to the impending danger of landslide. The displaced people have been sheltering in the local school and VDC office building.

Families of Lalit Raut, Man Bahadur Raut, Phanindra Raut, Tanka Bahadur Raut, Krishna Prasad Ghimire, Surya Prasad Regmi, Tikadatta Regmi, among others, have been displaced following the disaster.

The NRCS informed that children and elder citizens have been facing problems in the camps.

Meanwhile, the police said the landslide might affect other households in the adjoining areas and cause more displacement.
