Landslides damage Karnali Highway
SURKHET : After landslides occurred at many places following the torrential rain recently, vehicular movement along the Karnali Highway and Surkhet-Dailekh road section has come to a grinding halt for a week. The landslides in more than 35 places of Karnali Highway have swept away the roads. Locals said that the transportation along the highway was halted on July 27. According to Surkhet-Jumla road project office, the road would be reopened only after the completion of field survey followed by repair of the landslide areas.
"We'll begin inspection of the damaged highway from tomorrow," said Narayan Nihure, engineer at the office. Similarly, the Surkhet-Dailekh highway has also not been operated since a week now. A massive landslide has damaged a large section of the road in Dailekh's Talpokhari. The road has also been damaged in Rattikhola.
Officials said it would take over a week to resume the highway. Organisations affiliated with transport service have submitted separate memorandum to Karnali Highway Office and Mid-western Regional Road Division Office on Monday urging to immediately act to reopen the obstructed highway. The entrepreneurs have blamed concerned authorities for not taking immediate steps to resume the traffic. They also warned of protests if the highway was not reopened within three days.
