Kathmandu, August 29:

The central working committee of the Nepali Congress continued its discussions on a paper presented by party general secretary Bimalendra Nidhi. The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday.

Sujata Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Mahesh Acharya, Maha Laxami Upadhyay, Minendra Rijal, Indra Bahadur Gurung, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Pradip Giri, Dr Minendra Rijal and Shushil Man Sherchan spoke at the meeting.Dr Rijal demanded that the dates for Mahasamiti meet and General Convention be fixed. He suggested that the party could hold the Mahasamiti meet in three and the convention in 10 months.

He said leaders are open to new ideas when they are young, adding that only during youth can leaders make lasting contributions.

He suggested party leaders to retire after attaining the age of 60. “Save some exceptions, people are highly opinionated after the age of 60,” he said.

Party vice-president Prakash Man Singh said non-implementation of the agreement signed between Girija Prasad Koirala and Sher Bahadur Deuba to facilitate the unification of the NC and NC (D) was to blame for the party’s poor showing in the CA elections.

The party should be revamped as per the unification agreement, Singh said, adding that the party should hear the voice of people, who will take part in the Mahasamiti meeting, and fix the date for the GC. He called for overhauling of the party structure and formation of 21 wings of the party.

Another Speaker Maha Laxami Upadhyay urged the leadership to set the date for the Mahasamiti and the GC meets first and make preparations for the same. She called for unification of all units of the party’s factions and increased contact with the lower rung.

According to NC CA member Jeevan Prem Shrestha, those who spoke today highlighted the need to move the party with changing times and make the party more inclusive.
