Leaders, NHRC team talk peace
Kathmandu, September 23:
The National Human Rights Commission today met prominent political leaders and held discussions on human rights and peace process. They also held discussions on the role the commission can play to facilitate communication between the parties to the conflict. The team led by NHRC chairman Nain Bahadur Khatri met Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala, Rastriya Janashakti Party president Surya Bahadur Thapa, Rastriya Prajatantra Party president Pashupati Shamsher Rana, and NC (D) president Sher Bahadur Deuba. “We talked about how the commission can play an important role in getting all the parties in conflict to talk to each other to pave the way for the peace process,” said an NHRC commissioner, Sudip Pathak. The NHRC, according to him, plans to meet the government and Maoist representatives to discuss pressing issues. He added that the NHRC has called on the Maoists to halt killings, abductions, tortures, displacing individuals, and collecting donations. Meanwhile, the NHRC team is leaving tomorrow to monitor human rights situation in 10 districts, including Sindhuli, Rautahat, Parsa, Dailekh, and Gorkha.
