Local representatives pledge eco-friendly development

Dhangadi, December 8

Local representatives expressed concern about worsening environmental conditions resulting from haphazard infrastructure development in Kailali.

At an interaction held by the Department of Environment in Dhangadi today, elected representatives said human activities had been polluting the environment.

Coordinator of Kailali District Coordination Committee Surya Bahadur Thapa said it was necessary to pay serious attention to address the problem of environmental degradation. He said erosion and inundation had increased due to extraction of river products such as sand, gravel and boulders.

Mayor Nripa Bahadur Odd of Dhangadi sub-metropolis said they were worried about the impact on the environment while working on infrastructure development. “The environment is becoming polluted due to unmanaged urbanisation in Kailali,” he added. Odd said a master plan had to be developed before starting infrastructure development works. “We will definitely face more problems as landslides have been taking place due to erosion of the  Chure,” he said.

Mayor Mamata Prasad Chaudhary of Ghodaghodi Municipality said environmentally conscious countries carried out environment study before gravelling the road. The local representatives of 13 different levels in Kailali participated in the programme.
