Local transport tax collection removed
CHITWAN, July 26
District Development Committee, Chitwan, has removed the local transport tax collection (Dhat) from different road sections effective from this fiscal in the district.
The transport tax collection body had been collecting various taxes from vehicles plying on the road section.
The DDC took the decision after people protested against the tax.
Meanwhile, District Administration Office, Chitwan, has also banned other organisations and groups from collecting taxes through the tax collection system.
Earlier, DDC had called for tender for collection of taxes at seven different places. But it has scrapped the system in the district from this fiscal.
Local Development Officer Bharat Mani Pandey, said the transport tax collection system had been scrapped after people complained of being hassled. “Though around Rs 30 lakh is collected yearly, we were obliged to ban the system as the locals were having a hard time,” he added.
Chief District Officer Binod Prakash Singh, said that his office has also banned other organisations and groups, except road board Nepal, from collecting tax from vehicles after DDC and local bodies put a ban on the system.
It is said that earlier, Nepal Egg Production Union, Aanpatari and Nepal Poultry Suppliers Welfare Union, Bharatpur had been collecting taxes from its members for insurance and royalty.
CDO Singh further added that nobody would be allowed to impose tax on vehicles via the transport tax collection system on the highway and other road sections except road board Nepal.
He further added that the system had also been scrapped due to irregularities that took place in the name of tax collection.
