Locals turn to shaman for treatment

PARASI:These days Kairi Malin, a shaman, is busy attending to patients. A resident of Nawalparasi’s Debgab VDC 6, Malin is popularly known among the locals as the “miracle healer.”

According to locals, people from neighbouring villages too count on Malin to cure their illnesses through black magic. Kairi visits patients’ houses, especially to cure them of measles which has spread throughout the district.

“The patients from children to elderly persons are suffering from this disease. So, I have to go to their houses to cure them,” she said.

Kari Malin, a gardener by profession, has been living alone ever since her husband died. She has been practicing shamanism for 25 years now. “I have treated many villagers,” she said.

“This disease that has spread throughout the village is nothing but Chechak,” she claimed. She said she went to the patients’ homes only after they called her.

She said she charged from Rs 50 to Rs 100 for her service.” However, I also accept rice, lentils and other edibles for treatment,” she said.
