Madhesi parties foil Nepali Congress polls in Janakpur

JANAKPURDHAM: Cadres of agitating Madhesi parties on Sunday foiled local conventions of Nepali Congress party in Janakpurdham.

As they staged demonstrations with an aim to obstruct the convention in Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan City-4, police resorted to lobbing tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

Consequently, a clash ensued between the Madhesi parties' cadres and police in front of NC lawmaker Lila Koirala's house.

Koirala was in Janakpur for the convention and cadres of the Madhesi parties had demonstrated in front of her house in a bid to obstruct her from joining the function.

DSP Nakul Pokharel, spokesperson at the Dhanusha District Police Office, said police had used tear gas as the protesters hurled petrol bombs at them.

Sadbhawana Party Dhanusha district chairman Sanjaya Singh, however, denied hurling petrol bombs at police.

The convention was scheduled to be held at the house of Brahmadev Yadav.

Meanwhile, local conventions of the party in neighbouring Mahottari district could not be held yet due to obstructions by the Madhesi parties.

NC leaders and cadres have sought support from police to carry out the elections as per the calendar.

The ward, village and municipal conventions were supposed to be held on Friday.
