Man accused of plotting wife’s abduction

Itahari, July 1:

A person from Sunsari has been accused of beating up and allegedly masterminding wife’s abduction over not bringing dowry.

One Bijay Shah, 27, of Laukahi-1, Sunsari, employed criminal gang to have his 21-year-old wife Reena Shah abducted for not bringing enough dowry, Sabitri Lama of Women’s Security Pressure Group said. Bijay and Reena were married in 2006.

From the very beginning, Bijay tortured Reena over the dowry issue and she used to visit her maternal home more often, said members of her family.

They alleged that Bijay employed an Indian gang of 30-35 persons to have Reena abducted when she was heading to participate in a wedding ceremony of one of the relatives at Kusaha on June 26. A vehicle with Indian registration plate was used to abduct her, they claimed.

They also blamed the police of not doing enough to rescue Reena. Her mother, Surati Devi, alleged that the police had colluded with the accused.

Meanwhile, Bijay Shah and his men mercilessly beat up Reena’s elder sister Babita in one of her relatives’ home in west Kusaha.

NGOs, including ABC Nepal, working for violence-hit women, flayed the abduction and appealed to the administration to effect Reena’s safe release soon.

Deputy Superintendent of Police at Sunsari district police office Rupam Lama said they had already launched investigation into the case based on the complaint by Reena’s family.
