Sindhuli man killed, his sister-in-law injured in lightning strike

KATHMANDU:  One of the two persons struck by a bolt of lightning died in Sindhuli district on Monday.

Police said 32-year-old Leela Bahadur Shrestha and his sister-in-law Nanumaya Shrestha (35) were critically injured when the thunderbolt fell upon them at Surutar of Hattikharka in the district yesterday. They were sitting in the porch of their house at the time.

Leela Bahadur died while both of them were being rushed to a hospital in neighbouring Udayapur district for treatment, according to the Sindhuli District Police Office.

Later, Nanumaya was referred to Biratnagar for further treatment.

According to data provided by the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, as many as 107 persons lost life and 254 survived thunderbolts in the past 11 months.

NEOC reported that thunderbolt fatality rate is second to landslide, which killed 145 persons during the period.
