Biratnagar, May 10:

The Land Reform Office (LRO) in Morang district has not been able to cancel the registration of double ownership in the land by giving actual shares to the tenants due to fear of the Maoists. More than 6000 tenants are yet to get their share of the land. Local farmers have been unable to deposit their revenue, as land revenue officials are afraid of visiting villages. The officials are also afraid of issuing deadline for the cancellation of land registration.

"We will start cancelling registration of lands by providing appropriate share to the concerned tenants," said Shyam Bhandari, land revenue officer, adding that the work will be started when the Maoist activities are brought under control. The government started removing double ownership in the land after the promulgation of Single Ownership in the Land Ordinance in 2001. As per the ordinance, appropriate share of the land is distributed to the landlords and the tenants.
