Maoists interrogate CDO

Sarlahi, November 2:

Maoist cadres today interrogated Sarlahi Chief District Officer Mukti Narayan Poudel on corruption charges and later seized accounts documents.

The cadres of the All Nepal Trade Union Federation, pro-Maoist trade union, accused Poudel of being involved in corruption and demanded clarification on the issue.

This is the first instance in which Maoists have alleged a high-ranking government official in Sarlahi of corruption and sought a clarification.

Chief District Officer Adhikari, talking to this daily, said the Maoists demanded clarification from him over corruption charges and took away the expenditure vouchers and other documents from the accounts department.

“There is no irregularity in the office and Maoists are not the authority to probe such cases, if any,” he said.

He said he replied to the Maoists that he has not committed any irregularity and also flayed the action by the Maoists.

All Nepal Trade Union Federation Sarlahi representative Janak Sharma, however, said they took Poudel’s statement after they found his involvement in corruption and other irregularities in the office.

“People will lose faith on democracy if officials and authorities lack managerial skills and there is lack of political commitment to wipe out corruption,” he said, adding that they are investigating the matter.
