Media can play crucial role in literacy campaign

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Ram Chandra Kushwaha today urged all concerned to help the government make the National Literacy Campaign (NLC) a success.

Speaking at an interaction organised by the Non Formal Education Centre (NFEC), minister Kushwaha said, “Due to the lack of farsightedness of political parties in the bygone years, the campaign could not be successful as envisaged.”

He stated that the media had an important role in disseminating the news about the NLC and its importance for the development of the state and its citizens.

“There are around 30

political parties in the country,” he said. “The NLC would achieve the set goal

if the parties encouraged their illiterate cadres to

join literacy classes.”

Jiwadh Mishra, director, NFEC, said no other sector would develop without the development of the education sector.

Dr Ram Swarup Sinha, secretary, Ministry of Education, said, “The media should support the campaign and actively disseminate information for the success of the campaign.”

Dr Tirtha Khaniya, member of National Planning Commission, said, “The campaign will fail this time too if the government lacks a clear plan and strategy.” He urged the NFEC to chalk out a strategy to make the campaign a success.
