Meeting of human rights activists ends

Phidim, June 19 :

A convention of human rights activists organised by Human Rights Network and the Information Centre in Phidim, the headquarters of Panchthar, that concluded today issued a Panchthar declaration.

Representatives from human rights organisations of Ilam, Jhapa, Taplejung and Panchthar, district chapters of Federation of Nepalese Journalists and Bar Association units participated in the convention. The declaration has urged the Maoists and the government to abide by the 12-point agreement, 25-point code of conduct and 8-point agreement and also emphasised on the need of mutual agreement in the process of drafting an interim statute and formation of an interim government.

The declaration has also urged the government to punish the suppressors of the Jana Andolan and provide peace and security as well as guarantee human rights to the general public in this transitional phase.

Participants at the convention said human rights activists and civil society members should regularly monitor the human rights situation in the country and the implementation of the agreements.
