Minister roots for CA polls in phases

Kathmandu, January 26:

The government can conduct the Constituent Assembly polls in two phases if need be, said a minister here today.

Citing the difficult political situation in the Tarai, minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prithvi Subba Gurung said the government may opt for polling in two phases during the CA polls if a single phase is not possible.

While addressing a function here today, minister Gurung said that commenting on deploying army for the security during the CA polls would be early, though he did not rule out the option. “The government has a number of options to explore,” he said.

He criticised the Madhesi leaders, including Mahantha Thakur, Rajendra Mahato and JP Gupta. “They were fine till they were holding ministries and everything got worse as soon as they left their chair,” he said.

“I still feel that the problem of Madhes is fake,” he commented adding: “Their major issues have already been addressed.”

Minister Gurung claimed that their demand of autonomy has been addressed along with other major demands and that the nation is heading towards a Federal Democratic Republican set-up.

He accused that they were afraid of being eliminated from their social and political ground and are seeking a power centre to remain in the leadership. Gurung also said that all major functions of the nation are in limbo due to the CA polls, which includes maintaining peace in the country.
