MJF CA member leads protest ‘stir’

Nepalgunj, December 5:

Cadres of Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (MJF) today halted traffic in Nepalgunj for 10 hours, accusing the police of mistreating MJF’s Consituent Assembly member Istiyak Rai.

The locals of Jayaspur, Banke, obstructed traffic alleging that the police had ill-treated Rai when he was returning home after meeting cadres last night.

CA member Rai and MJF’s district leaders also took part in the protest, Superintendent of Police Mingma Lama said.

“Police tried to stop three persons who were riding a motorbike with Indian registration. Police personnel didn’t know CA member Rai was riding the motorbike,” Lama added.

However, Rai said that he was not involved in the road obstruction. “Why would I obstruct traffic? I will directly ask the Home Minister in parliament to look into the issue,”

Rai said, adding, “Party cadres protested police’s mistreatment upon me,” he said, adding, “Drunk police personnel in civil dress mistreated me when I was returning home after meeting party cadres at 10:15 at Main Customs.”

“Two policemen stopped me and one of them seized the key of the bike; however, I did not get any response when I reported the incident to the police and administration,” he said.

“I phoned SP. He told me that he would discuss on the matter this morning but hundreds of cadres protested the police atrocity,” he said. The transport services resumed after the administration assured MJF cadres today of taking action against the policemen involved in the “ill- treatment”.

MJF cadres halted traffic from 6 am. Hundreds of vehicles heading to different destinations were stranded due to the stir.
