More women fighting against violence in Makwanpur
Hetaunda, October 25:
More and more women are filing lawsuits against violence and other atrocities in Makwanpur district.
One or two months ago, one or two cases of violence used to be filed at the Makwanpur district police office, Ratna Shrestha of the Women’s Cell said, adding that the number has jumped to around 25 this month.
At a programme, district coordinator of the Maiti Nepal Maya Lama said the scenario has changed dramatically.
“Women, who used to complain that they were beaten up by husbands, are now standing up against violence,” she said.
The rise in awareness among women is due to activities of non governmental organisations working to control violence against women, it is learnt. Seventeen representatives, including Nepal Family Planning Association and Children’s Welfare Society participated in the programme organised by the Nari Seep Sirjana Kendra and OXFAM Nepal.
