Most airports ‘mismanaged’

Kathmandu, December 19:

A report prepared by the Parliamentary International Relations Committee has said most of the airports in the country, especially in the western parts of the country, are mismanaged despite sufficient resources.

The report has suggested improvement in most of the airports, including the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA). “The physical infrastructure at TIA should be upgraded,” it said.

An eight-member team of the parliamentary committee headed by lawmaker Dinanath Sharma had prepared the report following on-the-spot inspection of over six airports. The team had visited the airports to identify the problems faced by them.

The report has suggested for blacktopping of Talcha Airport in Mugu and Jumla Airport. It has also recommended a new building for domestic terminal at the TIA. It also recommended for upgrade of Nepalgunj Airport into a regional airport.

Lawmakers said most of the private airlines are profit-oriented rather than service oriented and they should fly to remote areas to provide services to people in those areas.

The team has also found out that the planes belonging to UNMIN have not been paying hangar charge in Nepalgunj.
