MPs register resolution for freedom of press
Kathmandu, January 16:
Six CA members today registered a resolution at the CA secretariat asking the government to guarantee press freedom and take stern action against the culprits involved in the murder of journalist Uma Singh. The resolution also demanded the House to arrange a mechanism to monitor activities against press freedom.
Lawmakers Ramesh Lekhak, Nabindraraj Joshi, Shobhakar Parajuli, Ram Janam Chaudhari, Agni Prasad Kharel and Satrughan Mahato registered the resolution.
The resolution stated that the press was continuously under threat even after the government’s commitment time and again to save the press from attacks.
“It is pitiful that the press has been attacked and intimidated time and again,” the
resolution said.
Meanwhile, NC leader Dr Minendra Rijal today accused the Maoists of involvement in the killing of Uma Singh.
Condemning the Maoist affiliated union for obstructing the publication of advertisements in APCA house, Dr Rijal said that the Maoists’ activities have proved that they were not committed to press freedom and democracy.
Similarly UML leader Surendra Pandey also came heavily on the Maoists’ actions against press freedom.
Meanwhile, Reporters Club Nepal flayed the disruption in the publication of advertisements by APCA house, which is the marketing body of The Himalayan Times and Annapurna Post. “Deleting the advertisements from the pages ready to be printed and threatening the employees for not obeying their directions is condemnable,” stated Club president Rishi Dhamala.
