Nawalparasi drinking water projects in limbo

After the formation of local levels, major drinking water projects in Nawalparasi are in limbo due to lack of clear laws.

Locals are worried whether the newly formed local levels would give continuation to the major drinking water projects in the district. Locals at Parasi area have been reeling under acute shortage of drinking water after high arsenic level was found in underground water. As many as five big projects are under construction in the district.

The construction work of water projects is under way at Susta, Tilakpur, Sarawal, Bardaghat and Sunwal. Chief Purna Jwarchawan at Drinking Water and Sanitation Division Office, Nawalparasi, said the work of deep boring had been completed. “We have spent around one crore to dig five deep boring and waiting for ministry’s approval,” he said.

A local, Rabindra Kewat, said villagers were compelled to drink water with high arsenic level. “We are very happy as the work of drinking water project has begun,” he added. He added that locals were worried regarding the future of drinking water projects after the formation of local levels. As many as 2,000 households would be benefited from the projects. The locals demanded for the continuation of the projects. Meanwhile, Parasi Drinking Water Office sources said the work would be given continuation as the budget had already been released from the centre.
