NC leader Koirala blames leadership for party's failure

CHITWAN: Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Shekhar Koirala has said that the party has fallen from grace under a poor leadership. He argued that the party would not be seen in a positive light unless the leadership is altered.

Talking to mediapersons in Chitwan today, leader Koirala expressed his annoyance and said, "NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba could not execute pending party-works in two years which were due immediately after his appointment as the party President." He pointed towards the appointment of party members which is yet to take place, while the party's general convention concluded a long time ago. He said, "It is not correct on President Deuba's part, calling it is an individual's defeat and not party's." He argued, "NC will not get back on track until the president takes responsibility of the party's defeat in the recently held elections."

Koirala was of view that the party should have held general convention on time. "As per the party's statute, Deuba's term of office now remains for one year, 11 months, so he should hold the party's statute convention and general convention within his term to correct the party's course, leader Koirala asserted.

On a different context, leader Koirala said, "The prime minister's three-day state visit to India has not  marked any significant progress except strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries. He reminded, "India had already allocated Rs 780 million for establishing railway and waterway link with Nepal about one-and-half years ago, there is nothing new."

Leader Koirala said, "The white paper issued by Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada is ‘fabricated’ and ‘misleading’. He claimed that, the leftist governments in the past were responsible for pushing nation’s economy towards deterioration. He said, the communists have governed the country 76 per cent of the time since the 'People's movement', while the NC government has taken office by 24 per cent. Thus, the communist finance ministers were, in fact, responsible for the country's deteriorating economy.
