NC, MJF fetch seats in Morang

Morang/Dhading, April 13:

The CPN-Maoist won three seats, while the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum won two and Nepali Congress won one of the nine seats in Morang district, the home district of Nepali Congress president and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.

In constituency 1, NC candidate Amod Upadhyaya polled 10, 962 votes while Maoist candidate in constituency 2 Lal Bahadur Susling Magar polled 15,960 votes. Magar’s nearest rival, Bharat Mohan Adhikari of the CPN-UML, polled 11,717 votes. Madhesi Janadhikar Forum polled 27,508 votes in constituency 5 defeating NC’s Amrit Acharya who polled 10,324 votes.

In Morang-7, MJF’s Bijay Gachhedar polled 18,416 votes bagging the seat while nearest rival NC’s Dr Shekhar Koirala polled 13, 261 votes. In constituency 8, Maoist candidate Gopi Bahadur Karki polled 14,931 votes while his nearest rival UML’s Guru Baral polled 13, 514 votes. Morang-9 saw Maoist candidate Nagendra Rimal winning with 14, 930 votes.

Counting was going on for constituency 3 where Maoist candidate Sabitri Kumari Kafle was leading on a 10,475 count. Her nearest rival NC’s Satya Narayan Tharu was marked at the 9,685 count. In seat 4 of Morang, MJF’s Bhim Lal Chaudhari was leading with 14,751 votes till the latest count while his nearest rival NC’s Mahesh Acharya was trailing with 9,055 votes.

A report from Dhading said Maoist candidate Shalik Ram Jamarkattel won in Dhading-3 with 25,071 votes defeating his nearest rival UML’s Rajendra Prasad Pandey who netted 14,574 votes.

In Gorkha-3, Maoist candidate Amar Bahadur Tamu won. The Maoists consolidated their grip over both seats of Salyan district. In Salyan’s seat 1, Maoist candidate Tek Bahadur Basnet won while Maoist candidate Umakant Sharma won in seat 2. In Terhathum district’s sole seat, NC candidate Tulsi Subba won. Nepali Congress candidate Mohammed Aftab Alam emerged victorious in Rautahat-2. Alam who won twice in the last parliamentary polls got a total of 16,801 votes.

In Rautahat-1, independent candidate Baban Singh is leading with 5,888 votes. Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum’s candidate Amar Yadav is trailing with 5,424 votes, while Ajaya Gupta of Sadbhavana is standing third with 4,056 votes.

In Rauthat-3, MJF’s Ram Kishor Roy Yadav, Maoist Prabhu Shah and NC’s Sheikh Rasid Ali were

standing first, second and third with 3,251, 2,781 and 1,821 votes.

The result of CA election in all 5 constituencies of Kapilvastu district came out today. Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP), Madhesi Jana Adhikar Forum (MJF) and Nepali Congress (NC) have respectively won 3, 1 and 1 seats. NC leader Dipak Kumar Upadhyaya has won from constituency 1. In constituency no. 2, Dan Bahadur Chaudhary of the TMDP won the election.

Brijesh Kumar Gupta of the TMDP won the election from Kapilvastu-3 getting 18,126 votes.

In constituency no. 4, TMDP’s Ishwor Dayal Mishra has been election. His rival Ikawal Ahamad Khan of the MJF bagged 7519 votes. In constituency-5, Abhishek Pratap Shah of the MJF won the election securing 15,694 votes.

CPN-UML candidate Harkabahadur Singh was declared winner in Doti constituency-1. He got 14,506 votes. His nearest rival Nepali Congress’ Bir Bahadur Balayar polled 13,090 votes. Eight parties were in the poll fray in the constituency. A total of 77,981 voters were there while 40,271 voters turned out to vote. Of the total cast votes, 38,210 votes were valid and 2,061 votes were declared invalid.

Maoist candidate Khem Bahadur Bam won in Doti constituency no. 2, getting 10,929 votes. CPN-UML candidate Prem Ale who was his close candidate got 8,940 votes. Like in constituency 1, eight political parties were contesting here to win the hearts of a total of 67,988 voters. Of the cast votes, 31,535 were valid and 1,528 votes invalid.

Doti district has 1,45,969 voters. There were six temporary polling centres and 177 election centres. A large number of cadres and supporters of victorious parties gathered at the district headquarters for the victory rally.

Meanwhile, candidate of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum Karima Begum secured the distinction of being the first woman to be elected to the constituent assembly from Parsa district-1 in the Tarai region. Nepali Congress candidate and the party’s district president Ajay Kumar Dwivedi won in Parsa-2.

Counting is going on for seats 3, 4 and 5 and analysts estimate that the NC, which is leading in these three seats, will take the cake.

Seat 2 NC candidate Dwivedi polled 9,530 votes defeating nearest rival Shashi Kapur Miyan of the MJF, who polled 8,012 votes.

Parsa district in the Tarai is the only place where the NC is in a position to salvage its dignity. It has won one seat here and is leading in the remaining three.

To journalists’ queries as to why the NC was giving such a good show in one of the key points of the Tarai agitation, Dwivedi said, “It may be because the NC always remained open to fulfilling genuine demands of the Tarai people.”
