NC will be responsible if there is another conflict: Bhattarai

Kathmandu, Nov 27:

Senior leader of the CPN-Maoist Dr Baburam Bhattarai today warned that the country would plunge into another conflict if the Nepali Congress(NC)-led government failed to implement the Parliament’s directives on fully proportional electoral system and republic.

“Plunging the country into yet another conflict is not our desire. But if the government tries to dismiss the parliament’s directives, the NC will be responsible for it,” Dr Bhattarai said.

He, however, clarified that conflict does not mean an armed-war. He said that the media “misunderstood” party chairman Prachanda’s views on party’s stance expressed by him in Chitwan on Monday.

“Some envoys asked us to clarify about our chairman’s views,” Dr Bhattarai told an interaction on Dalits here today. He, however, did not elaborate.

Saying that discussions with other political parties on addressing the current impasse are going ahead positively, Dr Bhattarai said: “There can be no Constituent Assembly election with monarchy in place.”

Bhattarai said the stance taken by his party on fully proportional electoral system would be the basis for restructuring of the state.

Party spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara said people cannot be made sovereign without a fully proportional electoral system and a republic.
