Nepal doubts constitution by May-end
HETAUDA: Senior CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal has suggested that the ruling parties stop bragging about the two-third majority in the Constituent Assembly.
Speaking at a party programme in Thaha municipality today, the UML leader said, “As constitution determines the future of a nation as well as its citizens, every political party, along with the general public, should get the chance to get involved in its making. Hence it is understandable that the ruling parties cannot ignore other parties.”
The former prime minister also accused the Nepali Congress of delaying the statue-making process in the name of party’s general convention.
“It seems that the Nepali Congress is now focused on party’s general convention instead of constitution making. Nothing should be more important than the statute. The Nepali Congress, which is leading the government, is more accountable for the promulgation of constitution than other parties,” he argued.
Describing the failure to draft the constitution by the stipulated date of January 22 as unfortunate, Nepal doubted the promulgation of constitution by the end of May, given the present political scenario.
“As we cannot keep the country hostage in the name of constitution for long, it’s better that the parties set a new deadline and step up their efforts,” Nepal said.
“If differences reign, the parties could at least bring a draft of the constitution and settle the disputed issues through plebiscite later,” he argued.
