Nepal-India strip maps tide over border hurdles
Kathmandu, January 23:
Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav today informed the parliamentary Human Rights and Foreign Relations Committee that joint strip maps of Nepal-India border have already been prepared except for Susta of Nawalparasi and Kalapani in Darchula.
Yadav said there were no major border dispute between Nepal and India, except for Susta and Kalapani.
Nepal and India are yet to resolve the dispute over the origin of the River Kali, which acts as a border river in Kalapani area. He said both sides had no “authentic” and “scientific” map of Susta area.
The Nepal-India Border Joint Technical Committee, which was formed in 1981 to maintain border pillars and to resolve any dispute over the international border, had prepared strip maps of the 640-km long river border and 1240-km long land border in 2007.
“Strip maps of the border areas, except for the Susta and Kalapani areas, were prepared jointly,” Yadav said, adding, “Nepal has proposed to settle the Susta and Kalapani issue in accordance with 1816 Sugauli Treaty.”
Yadav said plans were afoot to find a solution to border disputes at technical, diplomatic and political level.
Both the sides have also agreed to maintain status quo until both the governments find lasting solution to these places, he informed the committee chaired by Padamlal Bishwokarma.
Yadav also said both the governments were committed to prevent encroachment upon the no-man’s land.
Yadav also informed the committee that his ministry had already lodged a formal complaint with the Indian government over the distorted fact presented in the Bollywood movie Chandni Chowk to China on the birthplace of Lord Buddha.
“The problem arose after the producer of the film wrote its script without knowing a historical fact about Buddha’s birthplace,” Yadav said.
